Relay for Life

SPRING--

RELAY FOR LIFE - the office participated in Relay For Life in June. For 24 hours, someone from our team walked the track at Walter Reed Middle School, never giving up. We raised over 2000 dollars for the American Cancer Society. We were reminded each hour that cancer never sleeps ...cancer patients and survivors are ALWAYS fighting the next battle.

SUMMER

Another TNT event. DR TINA KOOPERSMITH trained all summer to do an olympic triathlon. TNT , Team In Training, provided coaching to improve my stamina in swimming, biking, and running. In return, monies were raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Combining 2008 donations ( for the marathon that I trained for but never ran) and 2009 donations for the triathlon - over $6000 dollars were donated to the LLS society. This time I finished the triathlon - the Nautica Malibu Triathlon: 1500m swim, 40K bike and 10K run--However, due to an asthma attack, my performance and time was less than ideal, so two weeks later, I ran the OC triathlon and proved to myself that TNT really does provide great coaching. My time was @3 hours.

FALL

The office has begun collections for the needy. For two months we collected gently-used shoes and donated them to SOLES FOR SOULS. Hundreds of shoes were donated, thanks to my generous patients and staff members,

Since the collection site for SOLES FOR SOULS has moved, we have chosen to change our collection item for late fall/early winter. We are now askjing for gently used or new blankets and sleeping bags which we will provide to homeless organizations to help the homeless in the cold winter. If you can, please bring a spare blanket to your next appointment and we will find it a good home.

Some distressing statistics about the homeless in LA in 2009.

48,000 homeless were counted in greater LA ( including LA city, Long Beach, Glendale, & Pasadena)

3,312 homeless in San Fernando Valley alone.

67 % unsheltered, 33% in shelters, 89% individuals, 11% members of a family, & 2% unaccompanied minors.

2/3 are male, 1/3 female and 8% are children.

Thank you for taking the time and consideration to read this. I truly appreciate your support.

Much love and gratitude,

Tina Koopersmith

Community Service

Daily, I attempt to bring new life into this world...

...perhaps one of these children will go on to do great things. For years, this has been enough, well almost. But I have been dreaming again.

Last year I tried to run a marathon. I knew I coulnd't do it alone so I joined Team in Training. They trained me how to run a marathon and in return I raised funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Some of you supported me financially to meet my fundraising goal. We raised over $6000.

Unfortunately, I was injured three weeks before my marathon and could not run the race, but the experience was still powerful. I hope to participate again this summer/fall and this time cross the finish line at NIKE WOMEN'S MARATHON. My injury set me back, but healing from this is nothing compared to what patients with lymphoma need to endure.

Engaging my friends, family, and patients in last year's endeavor has made me realize tha joining forces with others is always more powerful than an individual. To save one life can be considered as great as if you saved the world, because that person may go on to save the world. So, I hope to try something new this year and for years to come.

I would like to dedicate my practice to community service and service and service for causes. Four times a year, I would like to choose an organization for the practice to support and ask my staff and my patients to contribute. Support can come in the form of funds but can also come via involvement. You can also help me choose which organizations to support. Together we can make a difference!

Tina Koopersmith, M.D.
